From Village Curiosity to a Journey in Scientific Discovery

Growing up in Kilifi, I was always intrigued by the mysterious KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme buildings. As a child, I heard many conspiracy theories about them, but my curiosity about science only grew stronger. My fascination deepened when, in high school, I visited the facility, which we called the “curiosity building.” Witnessing actual scientific experiments in action and learning about research on diseases like malaria and sickle cell anaemia was eye-opening. Then, I realised that science could be a powerful tool to create meaningful change in my community.

After completing high school, I came across an advertisement for the IDeAL SLAS Programme. Remembering my visit to KEMRI-Wellcome Trust and my newfound passion for research, I applied immediately, even calling to check my application status. That marked the beginning of my journey into science, and I have never looked back.

Being part of the IDeAL SLAS Alumni network and a Fellow has been an enriching experience. The programme has exposed me to diverse career paths, from fieldwork and community engagement to data management, IT, laboratory skills, and medical professions like pharmacy and nursing. This broad perspective has allowed me to make informed career decisions.

A key highlight of my Fellowship was attending international conferences, such as the African Immunobiology of Parasites, Pathogens, and Pathogenesis (AFRIBOP), and receiving specialised training in single-cell analysis. These experiences expanded my knowledge and equipped me with advanced research skills. The supportive environment within IDeAL, from mentors to peers, has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.

One of my proudest achievements is securing the IDeAL scholarship for my Master’s in Immunology. Through my research, I have contributed to scientific publications and advanced the mission of KEMRI-Wellcome Trust. Additionally, mentoring students has been enriching, reinforcing my commitment to inspiring future scientists.

My experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Structured mentorship and continuous learning have been key factors in my success as an early-career researcher.

As an African researcher, I believe locally driven research is critical to addressing the continent’s unique health challenges. With continued support from the Wellcome Trust and the SFA Foundation, the IDeAL Programme can further innovate and empower young scientists, ensuring its lasting impact on African health research.
