May 31, 2019

Dr. Samson Kinyanjui, KEMRI Wellcome Trust Head of Training and IDeAL Director, was among the independent panel of experts that participated in the validation of the  Health Research and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2018-2030. The workshop held on May 14-15, 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya sought to develop a list of health research priorities as well as validate the 2018-2030 Health Strategy for Africa.

Following the 1st meeting of the Africa Union (AU)’s Specialized Technical Committee on Health, Population and Drug Control held in Addis Ababa, the NEPAD Agency and the African Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with its partners organized a workshop, aimed at implementing the recommendation to integrate research and innovation into the African Health Strategy (AHS).

The AHS (2016 – 2030) serves as an overarching strategic framework that reinforces existing health policy frameworks and aims to build effective, African-driven responses to reduce the burden of disease through strengthened health systems and scaled-up health interventions.

The draft strategy was developed with the support of a technical working group (TWG) comprising NEPAD Agency, AUC RECs, AAS, UNFPA, ANDI, EDCTP, MRC-SA, PATH, SANBio, CSIR-SA, WHO, IN-DEPTH, and NIHR Unit Tackling Infections to Benefit Africa (TIBA) at The University of Edinburgh.
