Ndugwa Henry
PhD Fellow, KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme
Henry is a PhD fellow at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, part of the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL), in collaboration with Pwani University. His doctoral research focuses on understanding malaria pathogenesis through host-parasite interactions, particularly the role of Plasmodium falciparum var gene expression in severe malaria.
His work integrates molecular biology, immuno-epidemiology, and host genetics to identify immuno-dominant var genes and elucidate how human malaria protective genetic variants, such as the sickle cell trait and the Dantu blood group, modulate var gene expression. Henry is supervised by Prof. Samson Kinyanjui, Prof. Abdirahman Abdi, and Dr. Cheryl A. Kivisi from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
As a bioinformatician, Henry is dedicated to advancing genomics and data-driven research to inform the development of diagnostics, treatment strategies, and vaccines for infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.
