Nancy Mbeyu

Nancy Mbeyu is a social science researcher at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP), Kilifi, Kenya. In 2015, she secured a Wellcome Trust Training Fellowship to pursue her Master of Arts Degree in Education, Health Promotion and International Development from University College London- Institute of Education (UCL-IOE). Thereafter, she worked as a Research Officer in the School Engagement Programme (https://sep.kemri-wellcome.org/) at the KWTRP for about 3 years between 2016 and 2019.

Nancy was awarded a Global Health Bioethics Network (GHBN) scholarship in 2019 to pursue a PhD in Health and Social Care from The Open University, UK. With Education being a fundamental right and key determinant of health and well-being, Nancy’s PhD project aimed to understand the challenges and opportunities for enhancing school re-entry, especially for adolescent mothers in Kilifi County. This was an exploratory qualitative and participatory study that involved a review of policies, collecting data from stakeholders, adolescent mothers, and their families.

As part of her CDY, Nancy is supporting the NEWRISK project (https://www.newrisk.org/home) under the supervision of Prof Benjamin Tsofa. The larger project seeks to understand how the health system may be strengthened towards dealing with the glaring climate risk. More specifically, Nancy is employing her skills in reviewing policy documents and involving stakeholders to understand and strengthen the health sector plans and priorities for dealing with extreme weather events.
