Ephy Atieno

Masters in Immunology Fellow

I am a biochemist and an aspiring research scientist. I hold a bachelor of science in Biochemistry from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and Post Graduate Diploma in health research methods from  Pwani University  under the IDeAL2.0 scholarship. Currently, I am an MSc  Immunology fellow under the same scholarship.

I have gained valuable experience at the Programme working under supervision and mentorship of Dr. Sophie Uyoga as a KEMRI-CGMR-C intern and transitioning to the PGDip. For my PGD, I focused on investigating inflammation in individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and its association with development of immune responses post-transfusion. This work is important because SCA patients often require blood transfusions, which can have adverse effects.

As an MSc student, I am keen to deepen my understanding of the mechanisms underlying human diseases, prepare for PhD studies in molecular immunology and ultimately contribute to improvements in healthcare. I hope to inspire and mentor the next generation of researchers to promote scientific leadership in Africa. Beyond professional work, I love reading which challenges my thinking and helps me stay informed.
