Cecillia is a junior research scientist with a background in biochemistry and immunology. She is currently pursuing a PhD in nutritional studies at the Open University of the UK with support from the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders. During her master’s at Pwani University, Cecillia investigated the possible biological mechanisms underlying mortality among children treated for complicated severe malnutrition. Results from this work highlighted the complexities of malnutrition and underscored the need for informed policy-driven interventions.
Currently, Cecillia’s research focuses on the post-natal effects of multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) during pregnancy. Her research work is nested within the Virutubisho clinical trial that seeks to determine the optimal MMS dosage for both pregnant and non-pregnant women in Kilifi, Kenya. Specifically, Cecillia explores how the antenatal MMS given in Virutubisho impacts human milk micronutrients, breastfeeding practices and infant growth. Additionally, she explores maternal dietary intake using 24-hour recall surveys to understand the broader nutritional context better.
As global health strategies shift from conventional antenatal iron and folic acid supplementation to multiple micronutrients, her research is particularly timely. Findings from her current and future research work aim to contribute to evidence-based interventions that could improve maternal nutrition, human milk quality, breastfeeding, and overall child health outcomes.
