Agnes Mutua

PhD Fellow, KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme

Agnes is a PhD fellow, registered at The Open University, UK. She is investigating the impact of micronutrients on neurodevelopmental outcomes in early childhood. Her work focuses on how deficiencies in key micronutrients affect neurodevelopment in pre-school children, while accounting for the effects of co-occurring biological and psychosocial risk factors. She aims to provide evidence that will inform targeted interventions to improve child development. Agnes is supervised by Prof. Sarah Atkinson, Prof. Amina Abubakar and Prof. Sophie Moore and her child neuroassessment work is partly supported by the John Fell Fund from the University of Oxford.

Agnes holds an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Research Methods from Pwani University, and a BSc in Environmental Health from Kenyatta University. Her prior work includes coordinating a Lancet Haematology Commission on Anaemia, and before that, she worked as a Study Coordinator for the PRECISE-Dyad study at Aga Khan University, Kenya. Through a Wellcome International Master’s Fellowship, she previously examined the links between iron, anaemia, and vitamin D with neurodevelopmental outcomes in Ugandan children using data from the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study.
