DEVELOPMENTAL ORIGINS OF HEALTH AND DISEASE TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE: FROM CELL TO SOCIETY.

The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), the MRC Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand, the DOHaD African Chapter and other partners are hosting a Summer School in November 2017 at STIAS entitled Developmental Origins of Health and Disease Translational Science: from Cell to Society.

The focus of the Summer School is to build research capacity and a network of young scientists. The curriculum will be delivered by both African and International experts and will cover topics such as:

• developmental origins of health and disease;
• the importance of DOHaD for African research;
• DOHaD Africa Chapter;
• research gaps, study design and opportunities;
• analysing longitudinal data;
• maternal health and developmental biology, and stem cell science; and
• public health policy and the SDGs.

Target participants are early career professionals in the field of medical sciences i.e. MD/PhD level or postdoctoral fellows aged 40 years or below, who have a demonstrated research interest or with a background in DOHaD or stem cell science or regenerative medicine; be employed in a research institution or a university and who have identified a mentor at their present institution. Applicants for postdoctoral training must have completed the PhD/MD degree within the past five years. Applicants with Masters degree must currently be registered for PhD and avail proof of this.

Funding from the AAS and STIAS is available to support young scientists from any African country (travel and accommodation) to attend the Summer School (arriving 20th November in Stellenbosch and departing from the afternoon of the 24th November). There are a limited number of places and if you are interested please submit your application by 30th September 2017.

1. Nominations are made online on the AAS Ishango Online System. Please follow the instructions below.
2. Nominations must be received on or before 30 September 2017.
3. Follow this link to get to the AAS Ishango Online System: httpss://aasishango.ccgranttracker.com/
4. Register as a new user if you have not used the system before. If you have used the system before please proceed to step iv.
5. The system will email you a temporary password.
6. Follow the link httpss://aasishango.ccgranttracker.com/ again to access the system
7. Go to existing user and log in with your password (first time users will be requested to replace their temporary password with one of their choice).
8. Once you log in go to new grant application and go to click here
9. Select DOHaD Translational Science: from Cell to Society and click on apply to begin filling in the online form.
10. Once you have provided al the required information, please validate and submit the form.
